Brutal pun, I know, but if your optimism for Spidey’s next solo outing isn’t skyscraper high after watching the just-released new trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, then we can’t be friends anymore.
Everything from the color palette to the lighthearted image of Pete/Spidey lounging by the East River, with the Manhattan skyline (and Avengers Tower) looming in the distance, seems designed to say, ‘we’re having fun with this one.’
I dig that tone. Andrew Garfield’s two Amazing Spider-Man films suffered from lots of problems, including being noticeably …not fun. And much like the Tobey Maguire trilogy, it got Peter Parker out of high school way too fast. High School Spidey is in many ways, the best Spidey. The Lee-Ditko years, when Puny Parker was still the butt of jokes at Midtown High, were some of the best graphic storytelling ever. I love that Marvel decided to ‘young him down’ and make a teenager again. And with Tony Stark as his mentor!
July 7th can’t get here fast enough for me.
Here’s the trailer to view over and over again.
